Your songs are yours

Everything you record, write, film or photograph in Songwriter's Drawer belongs to you. We claim no licence over it, no right to use it, and no interest in it of any kind. If you subscribe to the backup we hold a copy in order to give it back to you, and for no other purpose: we do not read it, train on it, or show it to anybody. What the app sends, and the list of what it never sends, are set out in the privacy policy.

What the app costs

The app is free. Writing, recording, filming, chords, search, the whole drawer — free, with no account, and it stays that way. So does “Get a copy of everything”: taking your work out of the app is not something we will ever charge for.

Two things are metered. Reading a photographed page and writing down a take you spoke cost us money each time, so they come with a monthly allowance on a free account. A paid subscription lifts that allowance and adds a backup of your songs, your takes and your videos.

A subscription is bought through Apple or Google, renews automatically, and is cancelled the same way — in your App Store or Play Store account settings, not here. The price and the renewal period are shown before you buy. Refunds are the store's to give, under their terms rather than ours.

The backup, and what happens if you stop paying

With a subscription, your songs, lyrics, takes and videos are copied to our servers so that they survive a lost phone. The copy is yours; you can bring it back to a phone at any time, and you can delete your account from inside the app, which removes it.

If a subscription lapses, nothing is deleted immediately. The songs stay readable, and you can still bring everything down to a phone. We keep the files for twelve months after the subscription ends, and then delete them. Your phone's own copies are not affected by this, and neither is your ability to take a copy of everything out of the app for nothing.

Keeping your work safe

The app is built local-first: your phone holds the real copy, and everything works whether or not anything else does. That is a deliberate design decision with a real consequence. Without a subscription there is no copy of your songs anywhere but the device, so if it is lost, wiped or replaced and was not included in a phone backup, the songs go with it. We cannot recover what we never had.

With a subscription there is a second copy and we take it seriously, but no backup is a guarantee. Take your own copies as well — the app will build you one at any time, free, and it is a single file you can keep anywhere you like.

Provided as it is

The app and the backup are provided without warranty of any kind, to the fullest extent the law allows: no promise that either will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose. It is a journal for work in progress, not a mastering studio or an archival system.

To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and our total liability for anything arising out of the app is limited to what you have paid us for it in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing here limits anything that cannot lawfully be limited — including, where you have consumer rights, those rights.

Acceptable use

Do not use the app to break the law, and do not photograph or record material you have no right to copy. Do not use the backup to store anything unlawful. There is nothing else to police: nothing you write is public, and there is no way to reach another person through the app.

Transcription

Reading a photographed page, and writing down a take you spoke, are both done by a third-party model and are offered as a convenience. Either will sometimes be wrong, which is why the words the model was unsure of are marked and why the original photograph and the original take are always kept. Do not rely on a transcript as the only record of a page or of a take.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the date at the top of this page changes with them. Continuing to use the app after that is how the new version is accepted; if you would rather not, deleting the app ends the agreement immediately, and cancelling a subscription is done through the store you bought it from.
