Can you transcribe handwritten lyrics with your phone?
Yes, but ordinary text recognition is the wrong tool: it is built for printed receipts and fails on cursive, on crossings-out and on a page written at an angle in a hurry. A vision model reads a handwritten page far better — provided it is instructed not to tidy what it reads, because a model's instinct is to correct invented words, dialect and deliberate misspellings, which in a lyric are the actual content.
Why
A transcript of a lyric has one job: to be what is on the page. Every helpful improvement — a corrected spelling, a normalised letter form, a struck line quietly dropped — is a small loss of the writer's decision. The transcription is worth having only when it is faithful enough that you can stop keeping the paper.
What it does
- Photograph the whole page, including the margins you wrote in later.
- Keep the photograph as well as the transcript. The image is the original.
- Check the words the model marked as uncertain rather than the ones it was confident about.
- Expect struck-through lines to come back struck, not deleted.
What it deliberately does not
- Using printed-text OCR on cursive and concluding that handwriting cannot be read.
- Accepting a transcript that has corrected your spelling into something ordinary.
- Throwing away the photograph once the text arrives.
- Transcribing a page you have not yet finished writing on.

Does the photograph leave my phone?
For this one feature, yes: the image goes to our server, which passes it to Google's Gemini API and hands the words back. Two things in the app send what you made without being paid for — this, and a take you speak and ask to have written down — and neither happens unless you start it. A subscription adds a backup, which is the only other way anything you made leaves the phone.
What happens if the handwriting is unreadable?
The words that could not be read are marked as uncertain rather than guessed at, and the photograph is kept either way, so nothing is lost by trying.
